Bizarre oxidisation

I don't recall reading about this problem here before, but here it
is. When I first used body art henna on hair that was going orange
from the synthetics, I expected it to turn out as a bright orangy-
red. Instead, straightaway, it darkened it...at first, too much! If
you look on the Mixes, mine was close to Alison's hair, if not a tad
darker, and brown [which I didn't want at all]. After several
washings, and well into the second week, it came up to resemble
Catherine's [which was my goal]. The same things happened the next
go: very dark oxidisation, suddenly emerging as the red I wanted. I
can live with the problem, but the trouble is that my hair grows so
fast that just as I get the deep, true red I want [without brown],
the grey is asserting itself...and the cycle starts over. Pierre
suggested mixing senna and henna [below], but I do like the very deep
red I get from plain henna. Just not the 'brownout'during oxidisation!
Is there any way to avoid that, or must one live with it? I get my
red hair for two weeks, after a fortnight of brownish stuff, and then
it's time to henna again.
My other problem: still coming to grief with lemon juice and itch,
and can't abide the smell of vinegar. I *thought* I did the 50/50
lemon/water mix last time, and still the ferocious itch. How little
can I use and get proper dye release, in a cold climate at that? One
friend says she uses two teaspoons of lemon juice, which, by all
accounts here, seems a bit low - she does get glorious results,
though.
TIA for any and all help, on both counts!

Katherine [and Blessed Samhain for anyone who so observes]
