help my mom!

Hi! I have been using body-art henna on my hair for about three years and I
am evangelical about it. I had nice hair before, but now total strangers stop
me on the street to ask me about it. My hair was warm dark brown with rather
a lot of gray for someone my age. Now it is a rich auburn and the gray has
become lovely orange-red streaks like highlights of a lighter tone - perfect!

My mom, on the other hand, is not blessed with great hair. It is fine, and thin,
and breaks easily, and is very gray at the crown and sides but less so at the
back. She wears is quite short, and she colors it with chemical dyes about
ev4ery six weeks and gets a perm about every three months, and on top of
THAT she uses a curling iron on it to get ready for work. I'd like to help her
break free of this dreadful business. I'm trying to talk her into henna but I
need to get the lowdown first on some things so I don't turn her hair green or
have it break off.

So I need to know a couple of things: can I henna over her fading
permament, and can she then get another perm in a few weeks over the
henna?

And how can I help her get a warm medium brown color? Her hair is grayer
than mine, and much more porous, and she doesn't want to look like Lucille
Ball, but I think indigo will make it too dark for her. She is 57 and wants a
lighter color than in her 30s, say, so she wants medium brown, not black, and
likes red but doesn't want to be RED, if you get my drift.

I am imagining using about 100 gms of henna and a few ounces of walnut
powder with hot lemon juice and letting it sit for about 4 hours, and
counseling her to wait for another perm for at least 2-4 weeks. Does that
sound right? Eventually I am hoping we can wean her from perms if her hair
is shinier and fuller and has less breakage - that way she can just use the
curling iron for a little volume and be liberated from chemicals.

Let me know what you think, experts. I can see her eyeing the L'Oreal and I
want to get to her before they do!
