Much of the store bought henna has synthetic dyes, metallic stuff ...
other added dyes ... and you can get a fast release with those. They
also work fast. They also don't work very well. Everybody here who
has tried body art quality henna after using store bought mixes ....
its like the difference between 10 year old twinkies and home made
cookies.

To get the dye out of *real* henna you have to disolve the cellulose
layer of the plant cells, in an acidic medium, so the Lawsone (the dye
molecule inside the cells) will be available to migrate from the henna
into the keratin in your hair (or skin) while the henna paste is in
contact with your hair (or skin).

If you cannot make time for henna, perhaps henna is not for you. I
mix up henna with bottled lemon juice and leave that to sit overnight.
I usually leave henna on my hair for about two hours and it does the
job.
