To both of you:

Start with hairbrush tests before you even go on to strand tests.

Valerie, what colour do you want? I've never used indigo, but I've
heard stories of green resulting, usually on very light or bleached
hair I think, so I'd be cautious. If you just want a darker colour,
have you tried repeat hennaing?

Melrose, are you after brown or red hair? You can slant the colour
slightly, but basically henna is red, red or red. If your hair is so
damaged that you cannot wash or brush it properly, I'd be worried
about hennaing it because that stresses the hair even more (heavy mud
on your head for hours, then it takes a long time to wash off). I
hope that hairdresser has given you a lot of compensation! Henna is
very good for the hair, but it sounds like your hair's too fragile to
cope with anything at all at the moment. Poor you, I'd be devastated
if anything happened to my hair so I do feel for you. How long is it?
If it's that bad, have you considered cutting it off and starting over?
