Wendy W's Mix
Wendy before and after henna gloss

I love my new hennaed hair!

Here’s my recipe and pics for a henna gloss. The past few years my natural red had faded to a light brown-blondish-reddish non-color, depending on the season. When it was super short, I used a Feria copper-red dye, and while I loved the color, it didn’t last very long.

I’ve been growing out my short cut for the past two years. I wanted to even out my hair tone and deepen the red (but not go too much darker), but I was nervous to risk two years hair growth with commercial dyes – my ends tend to get damaged. I ran across this site and after viewing all this gorgeous hair, I got inspired to henna my mop – I decided to gloss because my hair still had a lot of red tones already, and I can’t carry off a really drastic look.

My gloss:

    * 3 heaping tablespoons of Catherine’s BAQ henna
    * Enough lemon juice to mix into a cake-batter consistency

I mixed the two and let sit for about 12 hrs for dye release. I did my test strands with a 50 / 50 mix of henna paste and conditioner (Shiseido Super Mild – no silicones) and rinsed after 2 hrs 20 min. I was excited at the result! When I was ready, I mixed the henna with enough conditioner to more-than-double the original henna paste mixture. I slapped it on my dry and freshly-clarified hair, and wrapped in plastic wrap. It got really runny after a while (maybe the conditioner?) so I had to wrap a towel around the plastic wrap to soak up the drips.

Being a newbie, and not too adventurous to begin with, after about 55 minutes I started getting nervous and rinsed… and rinsed… and rinsed…

Joy joy joy – I was a redhead again! And my hair was so shiny!! I’m so happy I found this site and read all your recipes and happy testimonials, I’m a convert now too – thanks so much to everyone!

(Next time I’m going to use 4-5 Tbsp henna and less lemon juice, and some strong orange-spice tea. And maybe a few drops of geranium or tea tree oil…. And a lil’ conditioner…I can’t wait)
