Henna for Hair

Penny's Mix

penny

This is what my hair looked like the morning after I hennaed it for the first time. (You can't see my highlights, but they turned out a nice coppery color.) It had been a drab medium brown before, though I had highlights in it. I had been hoping to tint it red without ending up completely red-headed, so I am very pleased with how it turned out. My roommate helped me come up with the mix I used on my hair, so I can't take all the credit!

First I took 4 cups of water and boiled them with a couple of bags of raspberry zinger tea, which my roommate told me would make it stain more red than usual. I mixed the result with 2 cups of lemon juice, and added that to 8 ounces of Light Mountain red henna for hair. It ended up a bit soupier than I would have liked, but it seemed to work okay. Still, if you want to try this you might want to use less liquid. My roommate helped me apply it to my hair, and then I clipped my hair on top of my head, covered it with a large plastic bag, tied the bag to my head with an old dish rag, and let it sit for an hour before I rinsed it out. I could tell my hair was reddish even when it was still wet! I went to bed, and when I woke up in the morning, it was dry and it looked like this.
