Nina's Mix
Nina

After poring over your site on henna, I decided to give it a try. I'd previously tried a mix from the Body Shop, and found it very twiggy when trying to rinse it out. So this time I ordered some of yours, and it was beautiful powder with no twiggy bits. At 25, I have noticeable grey streaks in my dark brown hair and have for a few years. Every now and then I get tired of them and try to cover them up.

I've used your henna twice now, and am sending pictures of my first experience over the summer. I mixed this all up in a large tupperware container, using a wooden spoon.

My first mix:
-200 grams of your henna
-juice from three fresh lemons
-homemade lavendar water (about 1.5 cups)
-strong black tea
-3 tbs of tumeric

I mixed it the ni! ght before and left it out on the stovetop to let the dye release. I then waited impatiently all the next day, until my stepmother came home and could help me--at the time my hair was past my waist and I really wanted to make sure I got all of it covered. I think I put too much liquid in this mix, as once she really glopped it on well (in the backyard) and covered it with saran wrap I still had lots of watery drips coming out. I had to lie down to let it all soak in. After about three hours I couldn't stand the smell anymore and had to rinse it out. I filled the utility tub in the laundry room with warm water and soaked my hennaed head in it. This worked so well I only had to use a little conditioner to get the rest out. The pictures are from the next afternoon. As you can see I really dyed my scalp well too but all the grey is completely covered. From L-R: Grey-streaked roots in the sun; the same roots in the sun after dyeing; hair in the sun after henna; hair in the shade aft! er henna.

I also hennaed my hair again yesterday, and used a slightly different mix:
-100 grams of your henna (I've had a haircut, and now my hair is just above my waist)
-the juice from one of those small lemon-shaped plastic containers you find in the grocery store
-a large mugful of cooled black tea, brewed with five bags
-half a small container of tumeric
-a splash of rosemary oil
-liberal amounts of cinnamon (this does nothing to the henna, I hope, but along with the rosemary oil it made the henna-hay smell very pleasant to me, it gives me a bad headache sometimes)

This made a thick paste, and I think I should have added more liquid, but I wanted badly to avoid the hours of dripping and having to lie down immobile of my last attempt. I worked this into my hair as well as I could by myself, laying down lots of newspaper all over the bathroom! floor and fixtures before beginning. I should've mixed up about 150 grams for my hair, as I didn't quite have enough--but I'll get the small area I mixed when I do it again in a month. I mixed it about 24 hours in advance, which made me very worried about the dye dying before I got it on my head. Next time I'll do it just before I go to bed the night before.

I piled my hair on top of my head, wrapped it all well with saran wrap and put a huge shower cap for bouffant hair over it all. I'd previously worked in vaseline around the hairline and I had a bunch of cotton balls to place around the edges of my hair under the saran wrap to catch drips, but I didn't need them at all.

I had no drips with my thicker paste. and was able to do everything I needed to around the house and so was able to leave it on for 8.5 hours. During that time I spent about two or two and a half hours relaxing with a heating pad turned up to high on! top of all my saran wrap and shower cap. I did it for about an hour in the middle, then the last hour and a half. I then was able to get the henna out the way I did last time, by dunking my head and rinsing in the utility sink, though the paste was so much thicker it did take a lot more rinsing and gobs of conditioner to mostly come out. I then went to bed and waited until the next afternoon to shampoo. Cleanup was very easy: there were only a few little spots in the sink to rinse off and my gloves, saran wrap and the newspaper to throw away.

The grey is completely covered again (except for a little patch I missed, and that's still fairly well covered) and my hair is very shiny and silky and feels thicker than it did yesterday. It's too dark outside to take good photos but I think the summer ones really show how dramatically the greys turned to reds!
