Nilamani's Mix

| Nilamani's Mix I have naturally medium brown hair with reddish highlights (and some grey coming in) when my hair is in the sun alot. I have hennaed my hair three times in the last 5 months. All three times I have bought top quality henna from Catherine. The first time I mixed it (per her directions on her henna website) with (bottled) lemon juice and let it sit in a plastic container covered in plastic overnight (about 12 hours) on the counter. The next day I brewed strong (instant) coffee (which I understand now is not the best to use) and mixed it in and let that sit for another 4 or 5 hours. I thoroughly gooped my hair (which is to my mid-back) in sections, wrapped it in Saran Wrap and let it sit 2 hours (no extra heat). I washed with shampoo and rinsed with conditioner. The only fading over the next month and a half was the orangy hue I didn't like so much anyway. The second time I added 2 oz of black walnut powder to 200g of henna (halfway through the sitting time of about 12 hours) (advice and powder from Amy at Castle Art) and did the same procedure, hoping for something darker, but afraid to try too much walnut powder. It was barely any darker. The third time I added twice as much walnut powder again (that is, 4oz to 200g) and did the same procedure. This is the color in the picture. It's beautiful, but I still want it darker, so I'm going to try adding some indigo next time. And now I know about FRESH coffee versus instant. Incidentally, I've not had any fading trouble at all, only the initial orangy after a couple washes, and I wash my hair 3 or 4 times per week. I have noticed my hair getting thicker (which I wanted), but I'm still waiting for the ends to get stronger. I have noticed my hair feeling softer and not any drier. I'm hooked! Nila |
