Maria's Mix
Maria's Hair  Maria's Hair
Maria's hair right after henna, then three days later

I started on a Sunday evening by mixing 100g of henna from Catherine with about 3/4 cup of water and about 3/4 cup of bottled lime juice in an old cool whip container.  I stired well with a plastic spoon until it was the consistency of stiff mashed potatos.  Then I covered it and set it on top of the fridge overnight, about 16 hours.  After 3 or 4 hours I looked at it and it seemed dry so I trickled just a little water on top, but didn't mix it in.  When I checked it again I was happy to see dye release.

Monday I prepared.  I had bought a plastic squeeze bottle and cut the tip so the henna would flow with some pressure.  I had to thin the henna a bit so it would flow, so I added about 1/2 a cup of strong brewed (3 bags in one cup for 30 minutes) of Red Rose tea, 15 drops of lavender EO and a couple heaping teaspoons of ground cloves.  It smelled MUCH better with the cloves and lavender. *G*

One thing I forgot to do was warm the henna before I applied it, and it felt a little cool going on.  I'll remember to warm it next time.  Adding some pectin in a small amount of water as explained on Fia's Gelled Henna mix page helped with drips.

I filled my squirt bottle, put lotion around my hairline and ears and put on an old shirt and two layers of plastic gloves.  I applied the henna to my roots first, which had grown out from their chemical color to about 2 inches.  I worked it in, refilling the bottle once (removing the outer pair of gloves but keeping the inner pair on, no mess!).  I ended up using about 3/4 of the mix and put the rest in the freezer, in the bottle, inside a ziplock bag.

I wrapped my hair in plastic wrap, using a couple extra pieces to cover  the hair in front of my ears, then popped on a plastic shower cap and topped it off with an old towel turban style.  About 2 1/2 hours later I washed it out in the shower with several handfuls of cheapie Suave conditioner.

I like the way the color looks on my natural roots more than where it covered the old chemical color, so I'm waiting impatiently for my hair to grow, but I love the way it looks and feels.  The clove smell lingered for about a week, and I had some color come off in the shower the first couple of times I washed it, but it has held up well and oxidized and deepened nicely.

The best part - no burning, itching, or scabs like I was getting from using chemical color.  Other than having to mix it up a day ahead and leave it on longer (although in this busy world, having to sit and relax for a couple hours isn't really a bad thing, and I got caught up on some reading and tv shows I had taped) it didn't really seem like any more bother than using the chemical color.  I'm a convert!

After henna:  All nicely blended.  Quite bright, but .... three days later:  Amazing, eh?  I love it!  I'm hoping the color will deepen a bit more with repeated applications.
