Henna for Hair

J's Mix
J's hair

My henna story starts out like a typical hair-horror story.  I have naturally dark blonde hair, and on one fateful horrible day I decided to buy some cheap Blonde-in-a-box at the local Buy-too-much-Mart.  Well, I'm sure you all know the horrible brassy mess these things turn your hair.  So, next I decide to go to a beauty supply place to see if they have a fix for the ugly mess.  They sold me a nice new batch of stinky chemicals, AKA, toner and more peroxide.  I dumped the stinky stuff on, and crossed my fingers.  Well, now my hair looks like tarnished brass, you know, greenish.  Well, thankfully, the greenish washed out in a couple days, and I was left with just ugly, brassy hair.

Well, never one to give up, I decided to try a semi-permanent brown color over the mess.  This was OK, except it washed out in a couple days, not to mention more chemicals on my poor head.  Well, after a couple weeks of all this I decided to try going to the Pros.  The beauticians stood around me, looking excited at the challenge of my hair. I thought everything would be OK now.  They put bleach and soap together, and called it a "soap-cap', and then scrubbed the mess into my scalp for a good half hour, or more. My scalp was not happy.  Then came more bleach and a toner.  My scalp hurt for a good week after that trauma.  The real horror was that my hair looked the same as the first bleach mess-up!!

I have since then vowed no matter what, to steer clear of all fake, chemical, bad-for-your-hair crap.  Of course, in no time I had 2"of dark roots. During this time, I had been researching henna (I love your site, by the way).  The roots, were making me think of trying some Real henna, so after reading all  the stories over and over, I decided to buy some and try it.  I hoped it would darken the ends so they would blend into my roots. I used a 4 oz jar of health-food-store henna, mixed with lemon juice, paprika, yogurt, fructose, and some ground cloves, for good measure.  I let it sit for about 5 hrs. and then, because I have such fine hair, split the batch in two, to share with my Daughter, Ariana.  We slathered it on our freshly washed, damp hair, and then proceeded to wrap our hair like a fresh sandwich with lots of plastic wrap.  We put a cap on, and slept on it.

Ariana

I knew Arianas' hair would turn out fine, she has fabulous, healthy hair, which is about a shade darker than mine. More of a light brown.  As you can see in the picture, hers, looks very nice.  My hair was, of course, a little more difficult.  I, on the first day had flourescent orange ends!!  I was mortified, but not surprised.  I remembered I had some leftover "brown henna", and knew it had a grayish green tint (probably has indigo in it?) I didn't have anything to lose, at this point, so I mixed the brown stuff with a bit of the "blonde henna", and some lemon juice, did the same routine as before and the next day I was SHOCKED!!  My hair looked decent! I couldn't believe it; I was on ebay looking for a wig!  I am thrilled, and can't wait to henna again, especially with a quality henna like Catherine and some of the others use.
