Ginny's Mix

Ginny's hair before and after henna
| OK, folks, I decided to quit
poisoning my body and destroying my hair
with commercial packaged dyes and go back to henna which I used back in
the 70's. Back then you couldn't get a stylist to give you a perm
if you had henna on your hair, so I stopped using it. HUGE
mistake. I've been dying my hair in some fashion for 27
years!! THAT is alot of that nasty stuff, and I don't even want
to think about what it's done to me. I'm 45 and my "natural" hair color is a mousy brown, with gray and reddish highlights when I'm out in the sun a lot. About a year ago I bleached out my hair and went blond, HUGE mistake. My helper (my hubby!!) kind of overbleached my hair by going over the already bleached hair while doing my roots and it destroyed my waist length hair!! It started breaking off and within a few months, my hair was about a thousand different layers and was a MESS. About six weeks ago I got it cut, it's just a bit below my shoulders, and of course, LAYERED, and I'm working on growing it back out again. I was sick of the yucky blond (I'd been dying my hair red since I was 18), and wanted my "old" hair back!! After reading all the stuff about henna, and buying some not so good stuff, I found this site!! I am sending the other stuff BACK, and bought some Body Art Qualilty Henna from Catherine, and listening to her advice, I did my hair this weekend, it turned out GREAT, I couldn't be happier!! And this is what I used: 100 grams of Catherine's Body Art Quality Henna 8 oz of bottled lemon juice 7 tablespoons corn syrup 3 tablespoons allspice 13 drops Frankincense EO 13 drops Benzoin EO (I just love the way this smells, don't know if it really did anything!!) 6 drops of Rosemary EO Enough tap water to finish it to a paste, a little thinner than yogurt, kind of like hot fudge warmed up, THAT thickness! I tried the allspice because I read on the forum it would help it tone down the orange a bit, and as light as my hair was, I didn't want bozo orange, so I used it. I also used the corn syrup to help make it easier to manage, and it did GREAT. Next time I will use honey, because I just like honey much better, but I didn't have enough in the house to use, and we had a snow storn and couldn't get out to get more. But the corn syrup gave it a great consistency and the allspice made it smell WONDERFUL, AND my final results were a nice, copper red color, NOT bright orange, so not sure if it was the allspice, but it was NOT bright orange, even starting with blond hair! I mixed it all up in a white ceramic bowl, covered it with plastic wrap and set it next to the stove over night (we leave the oven on for warmth, so it was warm but not hot), for a total of about 15 hours. The next morning, I mixed it back up, and the top had darkened just a bit, so I assumed this was the "dye release" and went for it!! I put it in one of my applicator bottles, and snipped the end off a little more so the opening was a bit larger, and it worked GREAT!! No messier than the "commercial" stuff and a big, huge bunch nicer smelling!! Hubby helped me with the back, and helped me wrap it all up in plastic wrap, I put a warm towel on my head and left it on for three hours, which was much easier than I thought, no itching, little to no "dripping", not bad at all! I rinsed it out, and at first, it didnt' want to budge, but I just worked the water through with my fingers and it loosened up quickly and was gone! Really not bad at all, not sure if the corn syrup helped with that or not, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had read from others. I rinsed and rinsed until it was nearly clear, then I shampooed once, then finsihed with conditioner to get rid of the last of it, and then styled as usual. And I LOVE IT!! My new roots!! This came out a bit darker than it really is, and it's all indoor light. But I think you can see that my roots blend great and NO GRAY!! ![]() ![]() And the back. My ends are still just a bit "dry" looking, though they feel great, but I'm sure after another henna or two those will look much better. Bleach is NOT good for your hair, I can attest to that fact! And ME from the
front!! I really, really LOVE my hair, it's the way I used to
have it many years ago, when I hennaed back in the 70's!! I feel
like ME Again, and I'll NEVER use anything else than henna from this
point on. |
