I just want to thank Elettaria and Catherine for trying to help me
with the “dried out tips” problem. I live in the Middle East and
since hennaing my hair, I’ve spoke to quite a few women here who use
it as well (and have beautiful hair!) and have found out the
following: When coloring my hair I used red henna plus -- for the
first time –4 spoons of black henna. It seems that the black is what
causes the dried out feeling and to counteract it, one should add an
egg yoke to the henna mixture.

I’d also like to pass on a few other coloring tips that a girlfriend
of mine found on the Internet. I’d pass on the site but it’s in
Arabic so I’ll just give you a quick resume:

To get a Brown color, mix:
10 tablespoons of red henna
juice of 1 lemon
3 spoons of apple vinegar
*3 spoons of eggplant skin/peelings
hot water

Mix all of the above except for the lemon juice and let sit for 1
hour. Then, add the lemon juice and apply to hair, leaving for up to
4 hours depending on the intensity desired.

To get reddish brown:
(same as above except substitute 2 spoons of Arabic coffee for the
eggplant skin)

To get chocolate color:
(same as above except substitute 5 spoons of cocoa powder for *)

To get chestnut color:
(same as above except substitute 1 cup of hot, strong chamomile tea
for *)

To get a coppery color:
(same as above except substitute 1 small can of 7-Up(!!) for *)

To get a super reddish color:
(same as above except substitute 3 spoons of dried pomegranate peel
and 1 cup of strong, hot hibiscus tea for *)

To get a blondish/yellowish color:
(same as above except substitute 3 spoons of saffron for *)

The article goes on to say that one should NOT use shampoo on the
first day (just rinse well and use conditioner. Shampooing can be
done on the following day. Also, to make the henna coloring stay
longer, boil the water that you’re going to add to the henna with the
peelings of one orange and one lemon. Then, add this water to the
henna.

Okay, I know that this was long but I hope that this helps someone!!
I haven’t tried any of this yet but I plan on rehennaing my hair
again this Thursday (is that too early because I just hennaed this
past Friday?). I think I’ll do the “super reddish color”, if I can
find some pomegranates somewhere!!!!!
