Henna is IN the hair, bound with keratin molecules. Its NOT ON the hair.

Uh ... Jane .... its a misconception that henna sits ON the hair.
Henna binds with the keratin molecules that make up the scales that
ARE the hair. Some of the compound hennas that have metals in them
... the metals sit ON the hair. Henna is IN the hair. Just like its
IN the skin when you henna your skin.

The "coating the hair" is rubbish repeated in cosmetology textbooks
that have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to henna.

Some of the "box henna" washes out of hair ... but .... its not the
henna that's washing out. Its the other unlisted stuff that's mixed
with the henna that's washing off the surface of the hair. Body art
quality henna binds with the keratin and doesn't wash out!
