I was not clear in that statement--sorry. the 'mantle' I refer to is
not the cuticle, it is the ph balance. an acid ph will make the hair
more porous and receptive to color or conditioner. the cuticle is the
outside 'skin' of the hair shaft and it must be smooth for the hair
to be shiny and tangle free and protected from the environment or
wear and tear. If your hair is not ph balanced then the cuticle can
be damaged, so vinegar can contribute to the 'closing' of the cuticle
by restoring ph. But if your hair is in a relatively healthy ph
balance then a vinegar rinse will make your hair porous--which is not
a bad thing temporarily. this is why I always rinse out the vinegar--
I know some people don't(I don't know how they can stand the pickle
smell!)And this is also why I rinse in very warm water if I am going
to color or condition AFTER the vinegar and COLD water if I am using
the vinegar as the last step. The temperature of the water will open
or close the cuticle.
sorry again for being unclear.
