: So what can
: these two girls use for colouring their hair dark brown that doesn't
: involve PPD? Surely there must be hair colours out there that don't
: include PPD and give you more choice than just black or variations on red?
that's what I want to know as well ;-). I'll give you what I've tried so far:

henna + indigo was useless for me. dark brown for a couple of days, then all the
indigo washed out (within days) and I was left with red. people's hair seems to differ
wrt how fast indigo washes out, but it seems like a given that the henna will always
stay longer than the indigo.

then, logona has a dark brown (brown umber). I tried it about three weeks ago. it's
behaving weirdly wrt washing out - I have the impression that it washed out fairly
quickly from my roots, but somehow manages to cling to the rest of my hair, which
was hennaed.

I don't know what's in it, but I read on some german eco-consumers-test-site that
logona does not contain any synthetic stuff - but I think they only tested some of the
logona colours, so you never know. in any case, I don't think the brown umber
actually contains any henna - the colour it gives is not reddish, and I'm sure that if
there would be any henna in it, the henna would have stayed in my roots. it also
doesn't smell like henna at all.

walnut powder, sage and rosemary are also supposed to dye hair brown.
