Hi Debra,
I have great luck going black with amla.
I naturally have light brown hair
with around 20% white. I dye to match my old black chem. dye.
I prep the amla with red wine, and some other liquid
to thin a little, and let it set covered in the kitchen
for 12-24 hours. And, just like henna, I can speed up
the dye release by using a heat pad under the plastic bowl.
So, first I henna/indigo overnight. The following night I
amla/indigo overnight. I get black.
The amla looks like henna when I'm prepping it. It has a
darker brown/black layer on top when it's oxidizing.
Hope this helps, good luck.
