After much reading here and elsewhere, I duly tested several methods
(including mixing henna in an iron skillet for black stain, as I read
on an Indian web site... it works...) on harvested hair. My goal was
to find a viable and healthier alternative to PPD dyes, which I had
been using for 10+ years. I had a painful amount of gray, but
persistently waited for henna testing.

My grays *were* indeed orange on first app. I did not let the dye
release as much as I should have, and I only left it on for 1 hour
(again, being conservative, as it was my first time out). However, it
oxidized to a tolerable hue within 5 days. And it was better than
gray.

That was 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have re-hennaed 3 more times,
using slightly different mixes and longer release and set times. I
wanted to get a good buildup on the 3/4" of new growth, and I did.
The last time, yesterday, was most successful, with a 2-day release
and a 4-hour set time. The orange has not haunted me since the 2nd
henna oxidized. My formerly dark brown hair-with-gray is now a lovely
burgundy auburn.

So... no need to cut if you don't like the color. Simply persist!
