acidic or alkaline, I am lost :(

I usually mix henna with something acidic like vinegar or lime, but here I
read of henna being oxidised in an alkaline environment

how do I achieve this? Acid for dye release, alkaline for oxidation, what
is the best way to do this on my hair without sending it all up in flames
so to say :))
