Glad to hear you're using body art quality henna, that's vital.

You're not going to be able to even out that kind of colour mismatch
all in one go. You'll probably end up at first with bright copper on
top, deep auburn underneath, and black (with red highlights in the
sun) on the bottom layer. As you keep hennaing, it will darken and go
more towards an auburn. I henna a friend of mine (not in the Mixes
section yet) who has dark blonde hair which she had chemically dyed
copper. She left it quite a while before hennaing, so the chemical
dye had faded to strawberry blonde, fairly light and bright. The
first henna came out bright orange the day it was washed off, but
faded to copper a few days later. She could have got a darker colour
by leaving it on for longer, but she wants bright copper. Have a look
through the table in the Mixes page, which shows you what people have
managed to get starting from blonde hair. Blonde to copper is fairly
common, but Katie, Larissa and Elektra, for instance, have managed to
go quite a bit darker than that.

How long did you leave the sample on for, and was it still bright
orange a week later? My guess is that you may need to leave it on for
absolutely ages, overnight if possible, for the first few hennas while
you build the colour up. Once you've achieved a deep enough colour,
it shouldn't be too bad to keep up.
