Thinking about cloves....

OK, I'm holiday baking, using cloves and cinnamon, and jonesing for
my next henna. I wonder what is the mose effective way to use cloves
(seems everyone likes 'em, and therefore must have an opinion!)..
so, do you brew a "tea" - (ground or whole?)and strain it into your
mix, or just chuck the ground cloves into the henna (and how does
your plumbing feel about that?).....I'm thinking about boiling the
powder and filtering through a coffee filter.
Any thoughts anyone.
And, um, anyone ever try cardamom for scent <G>
