Henna and chemical dye reaction

There's a discussion about hennaing over chemical dye going on in the
LJ longhair community, and someone has said that she had a disastrous
reaction from using henna over previously chemically dyed hair. I
assumed that it was the usual story about adulterated henna, but she
says that it was 100% pure. I'm waiting for her to get back to me
about the brand and how long it was since the chemical dye, but in the
meantime, let's assume that it was in fact 100% pure henna (as opposed
to adulterated henna which wasn't labelled as such). I thought that
the conclusion by now was that henna over chemical dye is fine, it's
only compound hennas which cause the trouble?
