Am I right in thinking that the red part of your hair would only be the roots?

If so, it's probably that henna doesn't 'take' on roots very well. I get the same problem
with my roots - they just don't take henna so well, so the colour isn't as deep as the
colour I get on my ends. It's because the hair at the roots is not weathered as much
as the length. There's nothing you can do about that, it seems. I can almost
guarantee that if you'd do just henna for a longer period of time, you'd get a deep red
colour.

What Maria said is also true - it's always bright the first couple of days, the henna
needs to oxidize first. Unoxidized henna is orangey.
