how much henna do i need???

It's me again...i really don't know much (yet)about henna. My hair
reaches 2 inches under my elbow. If i use the gel method how much
gramm henna will i need? I just checked out a website which say i
would need 500 g, that will cost $35 dollars. Is that a normal
price ? And if not where can i get it cheaper?
