It was written in 1970, and bear in mind the artist is fictional. I
think he's meant to be born around 1900, and definitely Australian. I
should probably warn you that it's 600-odd pages, but it's one of the
greatest novels that I know. Teaser quotation from the penultimate
page: "All his life he had been reaching towards this vertiginous blue
without truly visualising, till lying on the pavement he was dazzled
not so mych by a colour as a longstanding secret relationship."

I'm now getting a yearning to study Patrick White, when I'm meant to
be curled up working on Victorian. Grr. I'm hopefully going to cite
one of Catherine's articles on henna and menstruation in my
dissertation on gothic, though.
