Rehennaing: how to keep the colour light?

J's due for her second henna, once she gets round to having a haircut
and my health improves. She's a dark blonde who used to dye her hair
copper with chemical dyes, and had her first henna in the summer. It
came out a lovely bright copper and she wants to stick to that colour
without going darker, though I reckon that when the chemically dyed
hair grows out she'll end up a bit darker due to her natural colour
looking darker than the colour it was dyed before. (But it won't kill
her, I'm sure it'll still be a lovely copper.) I'd say she's closest
to Larissa's colour on the Mixes page, but Pam and Elizebeth look
similar as well.

1) Am I right in thinking that repeated applications darkens the
colour? How difficult is it to keep a light colour with repeated
hennas? What do we do about this? She was hennaed for three hours
before; what should we do this time?
2) Well, more or less three hours; it took 45 min to put the henna on,
it's about 2 1/2 from the time I finished hennaing her to when it was
washed off. We hennaed from back to front. I think the top layers
are a tad lighter, since the 45 min is a substantial proportion of the
total. Should we henna from front to back this time, and how
difficult is that with bra-strap length, but fine, hair? Any tips?
3) Am I better off just shoving the henna on instead of sectioning and
doing ever little section very carefully, so that the overall timing
is more consistent? Again, any tips here?
4) I've got some of her henna left over in the freezer, and also some
of my ex-girlfriend's mix. Said ex-girlfriend decided not to continue
hennaing, so the leftover paste is going begging. It's the same henna
powder, but I added clove (ratio 1:6), some sage tea, and it didn't
have as long for dye release. Am I safe to throw it in the mix for J,
or should I not risk it?
5) Someone recommended using salon capes. Great idea, but I can't
find any sources in the UK. Links, anyone?
