: Other than only using distilled water as directed on the package
: really I guess I havent.

Distilled water doesn't facilitate dye release as effecively as an
acidic liquid, and it doesn't protect the -H part of the molecule ..
which is crucial!

: complains of dry brittle hair but I have read on other websites that
: henna itself is drying

Some people have slightly dry hair the first day or two, but then it
goes super silky. Mostly everyone gets pure silk from the beginning.

: because it coats the hair shaft and it is
: expected.

Henna doesn't "coat" the hair shaft! The Lawsone molecule penetrates
the cuticle and binds with the keratin. If you've got "compound
henna" (see link below) you'd get coating from the metallic oxides,
but I urge people to avoid that stuff and use body art quality henna,
which does NOT have that crap in it!

: And something that I spend many hours conditioning to
: combat my problem.I started using henna years ago for my hair to be
: better than chemicals this has not been the case

What the heck were you using? There's a lot of stuff out there marked
"henna" that has as little resemblence to henna as a popsicle does to
Haagen Daz.

: that this is wrong and good henna will not do this. And I guess what
: I am saying is that it is time I put this to the test. Or go back to
: peroxide.

Get some decent stuff. Body art quality henna. Start there. That
stuff will make you say "Amen, I'm a believer!"
