indigo over henna

I have hennaed my 9-year-old son's hair a couple of times, and now he's decided he
wants black hair so he can be a Ringwraith for Halloween (yes, he knows it will be
permanent). I know hair should be hennaed before using indigo. My question: how
recently? I hennaed his hair about a month ago; is that good enough, or should it be
the same day, or something in between? He would probably think green roots were
cool! I have had to talk him out of neon pink or neon green hair.
