Cassia obovata is a different animal from henna. The species isn't
even close, so you can approach it differently. No dye release to
worry about. Mix cassia obovata with warm water, rainwater, or an
herb tea that's got a pleasant fragrance (like rosemary). Let it sit
half an hour or so. Work it into hair like you do henna..... let it
sit 1/2 hour. Rinse. The med papers I found says the chrysophanic
acid in cassia obovata will move into your hair or top layer of skin
in 20 minutes, so half an hour should do. More may be ok or it may be
overkill. It seems to knock out dandruff and strengthen hair, and
leave a healthy scalp.

My mother had dyed her hair every month since the 50's. One round of
cassia returned it to baby soft, and it continues to grow out
lusterous, sleek and bautiful. No color change, even over silvery gray.
