ON the first search round, it looks to me as though you'd have to take
fresh indigo internally to have a problem, and the indigo species that
are associated with the problems do not seem to be the same species as
is used for hair dye. The indigo that is used for hair is also
partially fermented ... there may not be a problem, but you can always
be cautious. As long as indigo has been used on hair, by so many
women for 5 millenia ... could be ok.

The species Indigofera spicata (formerly Indigofera endecaphylla),
however,is poisonous: it has killed cattle and other animals7,8 and
has caused birth defects in rats.9 Other indigo species have also been
found to be lethal.10,11 For this reason, it is important to avoid
ingesting indigo internally unless you are absolutely certain that it
has been harvested and processed by expert, reliable individuals.
