Make a guess at what sort of mix you want to try and then start doingtests. First do a "hairbrush test" with hair you've harvested from
your hairbrush. Then do a strand test on your head. This will give
you a good idea of how it's going to turn out on you. Everyone's hair
does vary, but maybe try three or four hours to start with, see where
that gets you.
I'm hennaing two friends of mine. My girlfriend has dark hair and we
left the henna on for 6 hours. My other friend has dark blonde hair
and only wants copper, so we'll leave hers on for three.
