the rules for a hair henna mix:

1)Use at least 2tbsp of something acidic(within reason- not h2s04)per
100g of henna to achieve dye release. (thoughts on this ratio from
the penut gallery?)

2)Use whatever other safe ingredients you feel apropriate. Toss in
what ever floats your boat, tickles your pickle, or tangos your mango.

3)Take care that the consistancy of your henna doesn't get so fluid
as to become unmanageable.

4) Allow some time for the dye to release(usually overnight)

That's it.
