There is a slightly different version of the gelled version of henna (see down below on
the forum).

Mix the henna powder with lots of warm liquid (even more than what's in that recipe)
- it shouldn't be anything like a paste, just like liquid with some henna added - to get
a dye release. Then strain the liquid to get most (or all) of the fixed particles out of
the henna - you're basically left with a liquid henna dye. Then boil a smaller amount
of liquid with the pectin and whisk that into the liquid henna dye to gel it.

I've tried that version too - it's a royal mess to prepare and for me it was more pain
than the pros I got out of it. There are some definite advantages - you'll get a very
lightweight application and a very painless rinsing out procedure as there are
virtually no fixed particles left to stay on the hair. For you with the dreads I guess this
is what you want to try if you want henna color on them...
