How to wash hennaed hair

How soon after hennaed can you wash your hair?
Will shampooing wash out the colour?
And how to retained the dye on the hair for longer duration?
I am new to henna but a friend told me that I must not shampoo my hair
straight after washing henna from hair and shampoo actually wash out
the dye.
Any tips from the experienced would be appreciated
