: Just wondering...
: I have red hair naturally (and since I do henna body art, people do
: ask me if my hair is henna'ed as well).
:
: If I wanted to get the benefits of henna for my hair, but not
: necessarily CHANGE the color in an obvious way ('cause I like the
: color it is), what would be the best way to do this?
: Would I need to use one of the so-called "neutral hennas"?
: I really want to use real henna.
: I guess I could do strand tests....
: Any other ideas?

Hi Virginia,

I'm also a natural redhead, and came here looking for a way to cover
the few greys I was beginning to get. I also really liked my natural
shade, and I wasn't really looking to change it, more a bit of future
planning or "damage control", lol. After spending a few hours
trawling this site, I was intrigued, and began to think a subtle
colour change wouldn't be such a bad thing. All the benefits of henna
use plus the idea of starting to cover greys now so that they would
begin to blend in with repeated hennas seemed the way to go.

I was a total novice about anything to do with henna; at least you
know all the how-to stuff. Why not start harvesting some hair and see
what you get? In the end I did my whole head and I think the colour
is incredible. It makes my old shade seem insipid by comparison! I
feel that it just turned up my own colour a notch or two,and still
looks quite natural (I had never done ANYTHING to my hair before; as
a natural redhead I used to hate the idea of anyone thinking it
WASN'T my natural colour! Kinda snobby redhead attitude thing going
there but never mind).

The only other thing I could suggest was that my strand testing
showed me that I got all the colour enhancement I wanted in about 40-
50 minutes only. All the samples I did where I left the henna on for
2+ hours were much too vibrant red for my taste. So thats a
possibility for you, try leaving one of your samples in for 30-40
minutes just to see if you get a subtler result. I think you still
get the conditioning benefits in that time.

good luck with it!
