Henna and Gray Hair

My mother and aunts refuse to go gray. My mother and one of my aunts
insist I drip cancerous toxins on their heads, my other aunt (D)
allows me to play kitchen witch with her hair (short, dark brown
almost black with about 15 - 20% gray, mostly in front).

The first time we did it we used a box - don't remember the "brand"
in the color chestnut brown or something. Mixed with water, left for
an hour, rinsed. She loved it... her grays were reddish and she
loved the highlights. Next two times, same brand, it hasn't covered
the gray... just leaves it dirty gray. Well... then I found
Catherine's site, and this last weekend I got some "black henna" and
did half and half with chestnut brown (both bulk from the HFS, I
know, I know... probably my problem right there, I just can't get
better quality henna right now). So, I mixed it half and half with
coffee and lemon juice (no water) and let it sit covered for a couple
hours. It got a nice blue/black skin on the top that I stirred in a
couple times. Left it on for two hours... grays not covered, in
fact, left a terrible olive green/gray. HORROR! She's okay with it,
but obviously would like it to cover her grays and not look likes she
dipped her head in old guacamole.

This was last weekend... can I do it again this weekend? My plan...
get straight henna (no fancy colored stuff... just henna). Mix with
lemon juice, tea tree and lavendar oil to a thick paste. Sit
overnight. Mix with strong coffee to thin in the morning. Let sit a
few hours, then put it in her hair. Saran wrap and towel for 2
hours. Think that will work?

Oh, and if my mom wanted to convert to henna from chemical dyes, how
long would she have to wait? Is it better to henna over dyed hair
than dye over henna'd hair? Or neither. (Mom is 35- 50% gray and not
willing to wait long to grow it out).

Thanks!
