Hi Kim, i can consolate you :) Before i turned to body quality henna,
i used to use commercial black colour, too, of the what i then thought
"not-so-bad" sort (poly country). It ruined my hair slightly
nevertheless, and after i read about PPD i dreaded continuing
altogether, of course. I didn't want to cut off all my hair, so i just
switched to dyeing with henna, body art quality, this time. And it
looked really great, dark red roots and black hair - just a bit
strange for the first inch / month.. After some time, i mourned the
growing out of the black, cause the mix looked really cool, others pay
a lot for this ;) - now, that the black has grown out completely, i'm
even trying to achieve this intentionally now with indigo

So, i would encourage everyone with formerly black dyed hair to not be
afraid of the "red roots" when you want to switch to healthy hair! If
you use good henna, which will turn out rather dark/intense, this will
look good and you don't have to cut your hair or look funny ;)

However: make sure to test hennaeing over your commercial colour via
strand tests before!!

Fortunately, i had hennaed over this colour before, and knew it would
be ok. But, to prepare for desaster even more... months before my
switch, I also had tried to bleach it a bit (with spray-on blonde) at
the sides, but when i finally (after i waited 3 months) hennaed over
that, the black got even deeper. I didn't mind really, but you might
experience this aswell.

My advise would be to get hold of some really good body art quality
henna, and test test test it, if it's ok, just prepare a good mix and
cover all your hair with it, the natural streaks will look lovely, i'm
sure, and even the greys will be covered. And your hair will look
better and healthier with every application!
