chemicals over old henna?

I hope this hasn't been covered already - I did look through the
archives but could not locate the exact information.

I have very long hair than has been hennaed for a year.
I refresh every 3-4 months and have let it go for now. I would like
to know if chemical highlighting, or any other chemical process (over
dyeing?) can be done over hennaed hair.

Is it a matter of growing or cutting out everything that has been
hennaed and starting over?
