Brown with golden highlights! Yay!
Posted on: 06/25/2006 03:02 PM
I finally did the whole crown of my head today and I'm very pleased with the results. (see also my recent thread about mixing henna and indigo dry before adding water)
I mixed 2 tablespoons of henna (BAQ), 2 tablespoons of indigo (from Mehandi), whisked them together, poured just-boiled water over it to make a paste, let it sit for 1 hour without covering the bowl. Then I put it in my hair the usual way, covered with a plastic bag and a towel, left it in for 35 minutes. I then washed it out with shampoo.
The result is a medium brown, which is BROWN, not burgundy. My grays (I have quite a few) have turned golden and blend in perfectly with the brown. There is no sign of any red, only gold and brown, and no sign of any indigo-burgundy color either. My temples, that always used to get carroty-red whether I used indigo or not, are now light golden brown.
I just thought I'd share this once more, if there's anybody else out there who'd like brown but not indigo-burgundy and who doesn't like orange temples... I'm sure you can leave this mix in for longer than I did, although I think maybe 1 hour might be the maximum place to start, or else the red might start to come through. But that's just my guess.
Now I'm waiting impatiently for my hair to grow out so that I can cut off the dark burgundy ends I got last time. It feels great to see my old brunette self again in the mirror! :)

Hi! No, sorry, I don't... I'll try to get some, though.
I'm excited about the results too. I was growing my hair long last year (well, bra strap length), but since I have quite a lot of grays I started doing henna/indigo. Long, gray hair just doesn't look good on me. The first few times the color came out great, but then the indigo started to build up and I ended up with that dark burgundy color that I really didn't like. So I actually cut my hair off in despair, and I thought I'd have to put my dreams of growing my hair longer aside forever. Until now! I still have a few inches of that dark color left, so I'll be very careful not to do the ends yet (in case they get even darker). But wow, what a difference this brown color has done to my whole appearance!
My hairdresser doesn't know it yet, but I won't be making any appointments for a very long time...
Good luck to you too!

So I have a question - what was your color (not natural but henna'd) color before you discovered this mix? mine is now the auburn/burghandy color you get mixing henna and indigo separately then applying together....I was wondering if your mix now, would move it towards golden brown or if it would not color over my auburn henna'd color.

Hi there,
Half the length of my hair, approx. 10 cms, is burgundy red-brown from doing henna and indigo the "old" way (mixing henna first and adding indigo 12 hours or more later into the mix). The other half, i.e. the roots that are about 10 cms also, is virgin hair. The color of that is a very dark taupe brown with quite a lot of white hairs. That's the only portion of my hair that I colored, since I didn't want the ends to become even darker. So I really can't say if this mix would give your burgundy hair a brown tone instead. Sorry. I guess the only way to know is to experiment. I noticed though, that when I did a strand test without covering the hair, the golden hairs turned out more brassy. When I covered the strand it got more muddy brown.

My hair is a dark auburn with lighter coppery red strands which were formerly gray. I tried this mix and the coppery red strands turned a more medium brown - less startlingly different from the rest of my length. The rest of my hair has less of the henna orange glow in outdoor light, so I think this mix could shift the burgundy or auburn tones as well to a more "just brown" shade.

Kristina,
Here in Brazil they sell Henna already mixed with Indigo, and they advice us to add boiling water, and I used to get some golden/copper light brown on my hair (which used to fade quickly) with this mix, until I started reading information on this site, and follow Catherine´s advices to never put boiling water in my Henna.
My hair is darker now, cause I decided to "terp" my mix with Lavander essential oil, and got golden dark brown on my gray hair. The color stopped fading, also. I use Five Fives Henna mixed with Indigo that comes from Iran, in a 50% each mix. My liquid base is strong Chamomile tea with a dessert spoon of vinegar in it.
The question is: so boiling water doesn´t kill Henna at all? or it just causes color fading? Feedback us as time goes by, so if you notice any color fade, report us.
Thanks!

Hi again!
Well, it's been a few days now since I did my henna/indigo this way, and it has faded a little bit, especially on the whites that are slowly getting lighter, but other than that, I feel that my hair is actually browner now than at first. I'm still very, very pleased with the results, and I'm also pleased to have found a natural shampoo (J.R. Liggett's Oldfashioned bar shampoo) that seems to have taken away the purple-bugundy color of my old indigo, without taking away any of this new brown color.
I really can't say if boiling water makes the henna fade quicker, since I've only ever used boiling water, nothing else! But my henna color is permanent, or close to it. Usually I have to cut it off, there's no fading for me. (except on my grays)

Kristina, that sounds like a great mix for you! I tried it on a test strand (on my head), so I'll share how it turned out for me. The water I used was ~190 degrees F, if that makes a difference. I did only one application, so I don't know how the color would build up. I left it on for ~80 minutes.
I have medium brown hair with some natural golden highlights and about 1% white hairs. My brown hairs turned a darker brown with little to no red. They're both cooler and darker than my natural color. My white hairs turned an ash blonde (no orange!). They're light enough that they still stand out and glint against the dark hair. Still, I was impressed by the coverage on the whites. I don't think I've gotten better coverage when I've done the whole lengthy henna procedure.
I'll definitely be playing with this mix to see if I can get more golden brown tones and maybe better coverage of whites. I like that it takes far less time than the usual method.

Hi physicschick,
I'm so glad this worked out for you as well! I'm planning on leaving this mix in a while longer next time. I've done it twice, both times leaving it for about 35 minutes. The color turns out just as I want it, but it does seem to fade a little after a week or so, faster with regular shampoo and a little less quick with shampoo bars. Still, fading is okay for me, because I'm planning to gradually get rid of my dark ends (that are still very dark red with a burgundy cast) and gently go over to light golden brown (since my hair is becoming more and more gray, and I find it extremely unflattering to color hair too dark as one matures and skin color lightens). If I can obtain a warm, golden brown with gold highlights on the whites, then I'd be perfectly happy!

I tried this method on some of my hair since I also want to get rid of all the 'dark' of using henna/indigo for a while now. While I think it is more brown than red, it is still so dark and is red in the light.
I'm kind of bummed. I really wanted to lighten up and I'm afraid I'll have to fry my hair to do it. Not blonde or any thing, just not so dark red. My natural hair is darker brown with some blonde and red anyway, but the henna indigo mix has reall darkened it and in the sun is that 'irish setter red' I am begining to dislike alot.
Kristina and those who have tried this method with success, that's pretty cool, if you guys know any other lightening up methods, (or threads to them) I would love to hear it.
thanks!

Dear Guest,
The only thing that has really worked on my indigo-purple ends is using J.R. Liggett's shampoo bar. It hasn't taken all the purple out, but what used to be a very unflattering purple-burgundy is now a dark reddish BROWN which looks far more natural on me. Strangely enough, the shampoo bar doesn't seem to fade the red from the henna, though. There were some threads about lightening your hair with yoghurt some months ago. I tried it and it did help some, but since my burgundy color came back when I stopped using the yoghurt I'm thinking it probably just made the follicles on my hairs take in the light differently. (And it dried my already dry hair out.) Please note though that I've only done the Golden Brown mix on my graying roots, so I wouldn't know how it would make already indigo'ed hair look. I hope this helps some, and good luck!

Anaxa,
My hair is not hennaed now, I´ve had a haircut on January and all my hennaed hair is gone. I´m planning to Henna in the next few weeks, and then I´ll post a good resolution picture of before/after Henna.
My grays are in 30%, and they are so evenly distributed that the overall look of my haircolor is a beautiful silver-platinum dark chestnut (and I´m loving it!). My hair is very fine, I wash it everyday with a good blanced shampoo and I also have balanced meals, so it shines like a silver spoon!
Till then!

Please, please post some pictures after about 4 days to account for oxidation. Usually the hair shows golden for a couple of days and then turns redder due to oxidation after 3 or 4 days of being dyed with henna or henna and indigo.
